Nintendo Scared of the Competition?

Apparently Nintendo had Mario 128 available to show at E3 this year. While their stand was apparently very impressive, with the likes of Mario Kart Double Dash and the New Harvest Moon available, among others, it would have truly blown the competition away and done what many believe they needed to do by giving a first showing to the proper follow up to Mario 64.

However there are currently rumours floating about with why they kept in under wraps. The current theory is is that with Zelda and Metroid having been released, and making little headway as far as shifting more Gamecube consoles. Nintendo are running out of AAA titles to really make a difference this generation.

As far as Mario Kart and racing games go, there is few real new ideas you can introduce. But apparently, Mario 128 is something incredibly special. But what do you expect from Nintendo? Now i can hear what your saying there, whats this to do with the no show at E3? Well it appears that Nintendo are worried people will steal their ideas and upstage them.

"Mario 128 is currently in development, with concentration being placed on ideas that haven't been seen in games before. The reason we didn't put it on display at E3 is so these ideas wouldn't get stolen from us." - Nintendo Dream Magazine

If that did happen it would be incredibly damaging to Nintendo and Gamecube especially.

This really shows how much times have changed, with Sonys domination since their entry to the console world. I guess it goes to show, the Nintendo name isnt enough on its own to shift games any more.
